Bike Maras Moray is a must-do for any mountain biking enthusiast visiting Peru. With breathtaking vistas, thrilling descents, and fascinating insights into the local culture, this adventure will stay with you for a lifetime. Don’t worry if you’re not a seasoned pro, though. Your knowledgeable guide will provide all the necessary instructions, and you’ll be cruising the trails in no time on the latest full-suspension bikes.
A short drive takes you to the starting point amidst the fields of the Chinchero plateau. This traditional agricultural area is a feast for the eyes, with colorful patches of potatoes, beans, corn, kiwicha, and quinoa all around. Against the backdrop of the snow-capped Urubamba range, it’s a photographer’s paradise.
The ride starts out gently on mostly flat trails. A few small uphills punctuate the route to Moray, where you can hop off your bike and explore the unique Inca ruins. The concentric circle terracing here is unlike anything else you’ll see, and it’s believed to have been an early agricultural laboratory. The terracing’s varying depths and aspects helped the Incas predict which crops would grow best in each location. After touring the site, a delicious lunch will be set up and waiting for you.
After lunch, get ready for an exhilarating downhill ride on 750 meters (2500 feet) of fantastic single track. Although some parts of the trail can be challenging, your guides will be there to assist and encourage you all the way to the salt pans of Maras. These salt pans are still harvested by hand, and you may even want to take some home as a souvenir.
